BREMERTON, Wash. — Navy Region Northwest (NRNW) conducted a leadership training pilot program for Commander, Navy Installations Command on Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Sept. 26-30.
The week-long pilot course was designed to develop CNIC supervisory and leadership skills.
“We’re the greatest Navy in the world and it’s not because of our technology,” said Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commander of Navy Region Northwest. “It’s because of our people and our leaders. Developing leaders is what it’s about.”
The ultimate goal of the program is to make “CNIC Building Leadership” courses available to supervisors at all CNIC regions and installations. Feedback received from NRNW’s pilot course will be used to develop a CNIC-wide leadership curriculum.
"Our goal is to become the No. 1 employer of choice, and we accomplish this by investing in our employees, developing 21st century leaders, and retaining and attracting the right people with the right skills," said Gregg Pelowski, director of Total Force Manpower for CNIC. "Here at CNIC and across our enterprise, we are fully committed to our people who are motivated to succeed and dedicated to supporting our fleet, fighters and families."
Participants in the pilot course were supervisors-hand selected from all around Navy Region Northwest for their ability to provide feedback for future courses.
“I think this course provided me a lot of great tools to add to my leadership toolbox,” said Melissa Darling, the community recreation manager at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island who participated in the pilot course. “I think that it provides an opportunity for leaders to learn how to develop themselves and their employees. It is a perfect foundation for leaders just starting out, and also provides good tools for experienced leaders too.”
The pilot supports the development of seven leadership competencies that where identified via a NRNW survey as being the most important for supervisors.
“What I learned most of all from the course is that leadership is about inspiring and developing the people that work for you,” Darling said. “If you meet the needs of your employees; you will better be able to reach the goals of your organization. For me, that means being able to serve our Sailors and their families better.”
The course was designed to work in concert with CNIC’s guiding principles, and to address CNIC’s ongoing emphasis on workforce development.
The pilot course utilized interactive teaching techniques, challenging students to participate in the learning process. The course culminated in an exercise in which teams of students presented what they had learned throughout the week, based on the six leadership competencies.
“Leadership is an art,” Mayes said. “Leaders develop other leaders. Leaders inspire others.”
