    Story by Randy Cephus

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District

With the various field and lake offices that comprise the Fort Wort Worth District, there are very few people who come in contact with each member of the District at some point in time. One of the few employees who does is Juan Gonzalez.

The cheerful employee from the District’s Resource Management office can often be seen talking to other employees and wishing them a wonderful day, or asking about their families. Juan has served over 15 years as a federal employee, about 5 years as a contractor and nine years with the General Service Administration.

But what brings the former military cryptologist into contact with every member of the Fort Worth District is his responsibility of managing the Common Access Card program.

When not at work, Gonzalez enjoys fishing, hunting and taking care of his grandbabies. He describes a typical day at the office as updating CAC cards, taking phone calls and troubleshooting the Corps’ financial Management System.

“Once I became involved I found out that there is more to the job than simply issuing the cards,” said Gonzalez. “For instance, there is the security aspect, the interface with outside sources, and last but not least, system updates.”

Gonzalez sites flexibility and good working conditions as reasons he remains energized and motivated to continue working for the district. “Each day offers a new challenge,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez also services other federal agencies which require their personnel to carry a Common Access Card.

“At this location we also serve all military agencies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Public Health Services and any agency contracted by the government and require employee access DOD computer systems,” added Gonzalez.

So whether you happen to run across him in the halls of the federal building, in his office updating your CAC card or getting one issued for the first time, Juan Gonzalez will always greet you with a warm and friendly smile. He is one person who can say he has touched the lives of every employee within the Fort Worth District.
