ALLONS, TENN., (Sept. 9, 2016) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recertified two Dale Hollow Lake marinas as “Clean Marinas” during ceremonies Aug. 26, 2016, which recognized the marina operators and owners who are voluntarily striving to protect the water resources of the Cumberland River Basin by going “clean and green.”

Corps officials presented new “Clean Marina” flags to the operators of Willow Grove Resort and Mitchell Creek Marina, recognizing their voluntary efforts to reduce water pollution and erosion. These two marinas, along with Sunset Marina and Resort in Monroe, Tenn., are currently the only facilities on Dale Hollow Lake that have taken additional steps in their operation to receive this distinguished recognition.

The Cumberland River Basin Clean Marina Partnership is a voluntary program implemented by the Nashville District and its watershed partners to promote environmentally responsible marina and boating practices. This program, established in support of the National Clean Boating Campaign, helps marina operators protect the very resource that provides them with their livelihood – clean water. The effort encourages boater education, coordination among state agencies and better communication of existing laws, and offers incentives for creative and proactive marina operators.

Park Ranger Sondra Carmen, environmental compliance coordinator at Dale Hollow Lake, said these marinas are environmentally conscious in their business decisions because they want to make a difference.

“Dale Hollow Lake is a jewel in the southeast that still offers visitors a remote destination with clean air, water and shorelines,” Carmen said. “These Clean Marinas help to protect what is so naturally pure today and for our tomorrows. Congrats to each of these marinas.”

The program has established a list of seven management measures that are identified as priorities in order for the marina to fly the flag of a “Clean Marina.” These criteria include sewage management; fuel control; solid waste, petroleum recycling and disposal; vessel operation, maintenance, and repair; marina siting, design, and maintenance; storm water management and erosion control; and public education.

The steps to becoming a designated Clean Marina are straightforward, beginning with a pledge, which is a commitment to controlling pollution and erosion at the facility and promoting water-protective behavior with the boating public. By participating, marinas demonstrate a commitment to addressing water quality issues.

“Every measure we take to keep our waters clean today will ultimately enhance boating in the future,” said Darren Shell, owner of Willow Grove Marina.

“First and foremost we are stewards of these natural resources that we are allowed to run a marina on,” added April Patterson, owner of Mitchell Creek Marina. “And the clean marina certification gives definition to best management practices to ensure we are taking the best care we can of those natural resources of which we are blessed. We are proud to be a clean marina and always strive to go above and beyond what is required of us. Our moorage customers are very aware of what the clean marina certification requires and our very thankful we strive for that. We, as stewards, must ensure that the things we are doing today will leave these beautiful waters and surrounding areas in better shape than when we started.”

Willow Grove, Mitchell Creek, and Sunset have continued to improve their environmentally sustainable culture and are three of eight marinas in the Cumberland River watershed that have earned the distinguished certification as a Clean Marina.
