Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) lent a helping hand to the nonprofit organization Pets Are Wonderful Support in Los Angeles Sept. 2 while the ship was moored in San Pedro, California for the inaugural Los Angeles Fleet Week.

Sixteen America Sailors spent their morning volunteering to help package donated pet food and play with animals benefiting from the program.

“It touches my heart to see people who risk their lives every single day trying to make the world a safer place for everybody, volunteer their time to help us out,” said John Meeks, volunteer coordinator for PAWS.

The goal of PAWS is to keep pets and there owners together by providing food and medical care to pet owners with low income or debilitating diseases. The program has more than 200 active volunteers and helps 1,600 pet owners across Los Angeles County get the proper care for their furry family members.

“I know there are a lot of people out here in the Los Angeles area that are hurting,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Jonathan Connor. “These animals are great companions for them, and if I can help these animals stay with the people who love them, then I will help.”

In addition to helping at PAWS, America Sailors supported the community with more than 20 volunteer events, including Habitat for Humanity, aiding local food banks and visiting local children in the hospital and strengthening community ties while participating in LAFW.

Fleet week offers the public an opportunity to tour ships, meet Sailors, Marines, and members of the Coast Guard and gain a better understanding of how the sea service support the national defense of the United States and freedom of the seas.
