Fort Stewart kicks off CFC 16

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Fort Stewart is scheduled to host a Combined Federal Campaign, or CFC, charity fair at Jordan Gymnasium Sept. 7 and the Tominac Fitness Center at Hunter Army Airfield Sept. 9.

CFC is an annual fundraising drive that provides an opportunity for federal civilian, postal, and military employees to donate to local, national, and international non-profit organizations and runs Sept. 1 through Dec. 15.

Their mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost efficient and effective in providing federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. The theme for this year's campaign is "Make It Possible."

It does not take much for an individual donor to make a significant impact in the community, according to the CFC action officer for Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart.

“One dollar a week buys 12 elementary school students with trained volunteer tutors to help with reading and math,” said Alvin Lundy Sr., CFC action officer and installation voting assistance officer for Fort Stewart. “Our goal this year is to provide every federal employee with the opportunity to contribute.”

There are approximately 25,000 Soldiers and federal civilians who serve at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, according to the garrison public affairs office. It would take about $8 per person to reach the desired objective.

“This year’s installation goal is $200,000 for the Combined Federal Campaign,” said Lundy. “The CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with more than 189 campaigns located throughout the country and internationally.”

Lundy added, five dollars a week buys two months of meals for a homebound person, five wigs for children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, or two nights of shelter for a troubled or neglected youth.

The CFC website estimates over 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations participate in the annual campaign from local community groups to large, well-known charities. Each campaign is managed by a volunteer group of federal employees who work with experienced nonprofit executives in their communities to generate contributions and distribute them to eligible charities.

There are campaigns at each installation and people interested in giving should contact their local representative, which can be found at opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign.
