MCCRADY TRAINING CENTER, S.C. - Signaleers from across the state of South Carolina gathered under one roof Aug. 13-14, 2016, to educate and inform signal officers on roles, unit capabilities, and to build relationships in supporting unit operations.
The 228th Tactical Theater Signal Brigade (TTSB) hosted this workshop to ensure Signaleers statewide understand the importance of planning, coordination and utilization of both tactical and commercial communications equipment, maintenance, networks and cyber initiatives.
“Every year we host an event, but this year we decided to bring all Signaleers together to provide updates and put emphasis on the importance of cyber issues, putting equipment into use, and the formation of a new cyber battalion in South Carolina,” said U.S. Army Col. John Ramsey, South Carolina National Guard Information Management assistant chief of staff.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., adjutant general for South Carolina, stressed the importance of using only secure military communications equipment and networks during a mission or training event.
“We need to use the devices we are going to use in combat…The habits you develop while you are training are the habits you are going to use while in battle,” said Livingston. “Communications depend on being able to convey good, reliable information throughout the formation, and to do it in a very efficient and effective manner…Your professionalism as a signal brigade and your professionalism as National Guard members helps enable this nation to maintain the strongest military in the world.”
All Major Subordinate Commands (MSC) sent representatives, totaling 70 participants. From briefs on cyber initiatives to signal brigade operations to simulations, and everything in between, these Soldiers were provided discussions on guidance, support, planning and career management.
“The real goal of this workshop is to elevate the importance of getting all communications equipment up and running,” said Ramsey. “We need the Signaleers to understand that they are the most important guys on the team. If the digits aren't flowing, nothing happens.”
The workshop concluded with an extended panel discussion, where participants were able to ask questions to the senior leaders on topics ranging from success stories, career development, and best practices for providing signal support to MSCs throughout the South Carolina Army National Guard.
“It’s an extremely exciting time to be in the Signal Corps,” said U.S. Army Col. David Jenkins, 228th TTSB commander. “In particular, it’s an extremely exciting time to be in the South Carolina Army National Guard as a part of the Signal Corps. The 228th is a brand, it’s a brand in this state, and it’s a brand in this nation. Our job is to continue to elevate this brand.”
