JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, FORT SAM HOUSTON – The 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) held a retirement ceremony at the command headquarters July 8.

Friends, family and members of the military community gathered to honor Col. David W. Scheideler for his dedicated service in the Armed Forces.

Presiding over the ceremony was Brig. Gen. Kenneth D. Jones, 4th ESC Commanding General.

“I extend to you my personal thanks and sincere appreciation of a grateful nation for your contribution of honorable service to our country,” said Jones.

Following the general’s remarks, the retiree was offered the chance to share his brief military history and his love for his family who stood by him throughout his 29 years of service.

Beginning his active military career in 1987, Scheideler’s first duty station was at Fort Riley, Kan. as a field artillery officer.

“I’ve always been interested in joining the military,” said Scheideler. “My father-in-law was a World War II veteran and my father served in Korea.”

In 1992, Scheideler transitioned to the Army Reserve. His most memorable event during his military career was being selected to command the 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion during their deployment to Iraq in support of the transition from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn.

“Looking back at the past 13 years, I have been on and off deployments,” said Scheideler. “I missed a lot of things with the family.” Then looking apologetically at his wife he said, “Rene you were by yourself for four deployments.”

His plans upon retirement are to spend time with his wife, as well as his three children and two grandchildren.

“I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family and now it’s my turn to give back to them,” he said.

The 4th ESC, a subordinate command of the 79th Sustainment Support Command, is comprised of 65 subordinate units, commanding more than 5,500 Soldiers throughout Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The command, deemed the Army Reserve’s premier logistic sustainment command, provides trained and ready forces in support of global contingency operations.
