Camp Foster Base Safety is hosting a Ground Safety Course for Marines June 13-24 aboard Camp Foster.
Despites its name, the course provides Occupational Safety and Health training to all military and civilian personnel assigned to duties in ground safety.
“The purpose of this course is to create safety officers and managers for the subordinate units,” said Richard Duran, the Ground Safety for Marines Program manager. “This is important because these are the men and woman who are ensuring that you go home the way you came to work.”
During the course, participants receive classroom instruction, demonstrations and perform case studies. Successfully completing the course qualifies Marines to be Ground Safety Specialists.
“It is every person’s right to work in a safe and healthy working environment,” said Duran. “These newly appointed safety officers and managers are the ones ensuring that happens.”
Marines on Okinawa have an extra class load as they must learn both U.S. and Japanese regulations.
“These instructions go over the rules and regulations for operating a motor vehicle in Japan,” said Marvin Demars a Ground Safety for Marines instructor. “These instructions provide guidance on a variety of issues related to operation, ownership, and registration of privately owned vehicles and guidance on the use of government motor vehicles.”
Marine Corps Installations Pacific is committed and essential to maintaining Marine Corps Forces Pacific’s high state of training and combat readiness. To help accomplish this, every unit is required to have a safety officer or manager.
According to Demars unit leaders must appoint a ground safety officer or manager as a special staff officer with direct access to the commander for safety matters.
MCIPAC facilities are arrayed across the region with purposeful designs, clearly set theater-strategic conditions for partnered presence, logistics throughout, command and control, and military readiness. Our utility, resiliency and strategic design represent the requisite and foundational support to the power of MARFORPAC.
