Story by Tech. Sgt. Lynette Hoke

    133rd Airlift Wing

This holds true for Tech. Sgt. John Pyatt, a former Reserve Navy Seabee with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion out of Spokane, Washington. For 15 years he served as a Utilitiesman First Class. Serving twice overseas in Rota, Spain and Delaram, Afghanistan.

He is upholding his service during a deployment for training to Karlovac, Croatia. Pyatt and about 30 other members from the Minnesota Army and Air National Guard are work side by side with the Croatian Army Engineering Horizontal Construction Company to renovate and remodel a school.

“This is good training for everyone,” said Pyatt, “It’s good for the young guys to see how they do and how far it differs from how do it in the states.”

Pyatt moved to Minnesota for a job with TRANE Heating and Cooling Manufacture in La Crosse, Wisc. After having a hard time finding advancement opportunities in the Navy, Capt. Fernando Nacionales, Deputy Base Civil Engineer with the 133rd Civil Engineers and former Seabee himself, met Pyatt and showed him what the Air Guard could offer him.

“The combination of his civilian experience working in Research and Development for a HVAC equipment company and his military experience as a Navy Seabee makes him a great asset to Civil Engineers,” Nacionales.

Pyatt is now with the 133rd Civil Engineer Squadron's Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop and enjoys continuing servicing in his area of expertise, where ever in the world that may take him.

“I will stay in and serve as long as they let me,” said Pyatt. “I like it, it’s fun and the people are great. The friendships and relationships you make are for a lifetime and you’ll never forget.”

His pride in his job and his service runs deep because Pyatt’s son even recently joined the active duty Air Force has a HVAC specialist.

“I can’t put it into words how proud I am that he enlisted and did this choice on his own,” said Pyatt, “I was just at his Air Force Base Training Graduation before I left for Croatia.”
