Service member participated in the “Murph” Challenge for Memorial Day on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
The “Murph” Challenge is a workout made to honor Lt. Michael “Murph” Murphy, a navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan June 28, 2005, at the age of 29.
The challenge consists of a one-mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run, while wearing a 20 pound vest.
Murphy was a war hero who deserves to be remembered, according to Ramee Williams, a fitness coordinator for Marine Corps Community Services and organizer of the event.
“Lt. Murphy was the first sailor to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War,” said Williams. “He gave everything so that we can be here today.”
A workout means more when you are doing it in honor of a fallen service member, according to Terumi Nagai-Luebbers, director of Semper-Fit Health Promotion, Okinawa, Japan.
“I felt like I was doing something that actually mattered,” said Nagai-Luebbers. “He gave so much for his country; the least we can do is continue to remember him forever by doing a workout in his name.”
