NEW YORK – Sailors and Marines were promoted and reenlisted during a joint ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City during 2016 Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 27.

Adm. Phil Davidson, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, administered the oath of enlistment and oath of office for the service members as they stood on the sacred site.

“You all know the story of 9/11. Many of you joined or continue to serve because of the tragedy here,” said Davidson. “Those people that were sacrificed on these grounds are significant and have families and loved ones to this day that grieve for them, so that makes this an extraordinarily special place.”

Some service members had family in attendance to mark the momentous occasion.

“Today was really special for me because I joined Sept. 19, 2001, eight days after 9/11, so this was where it all started for my career,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jemiko Price, Fleet Surgical Team Six. “My husband is also active duty, and having him and our son here is very meaningful.”

Lt. j.g. Jose Iglesias, USS Farragut (DDG 99) appreciated the support of the observers during the ceremony.

“Having the ceremony here gives us the chance to show the people of New York what we’re doing, and a chance to see a unique military ceremony,” he said. “It’s nice to do it in a place where we receive a lot of support.”

FWNY provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.

“I love Fleet Week, the people have been very welcoming,” said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Timothy Boyd, USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43). “A lot of people have been curious about our jobs and ships, and I’m happy to be able to try to answer any questions they have.”

The joint reenlistment is one of several events occurring during Fleet Week. It is estimated that nearly 4,500 sea service members are participating this year.
