NEW YORK – Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen attended concerts by country music artist Dierks Bentley and hip-hop artist Flo Rida in New York City during Fleet 2016 Week New York (FWNY), May 27.

Held nearly every year since 1984, FWNY is the city’s celebration of the sea services. FWNY provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.

“This is pretty awesome … I saw Dierks Bentley in concert in 2009, so it’s just great to be a part of Fleet Week and The Today Show,” said Lt. Cmdr. Michael Knickerbocker, Carrier Strike Group Twelve. “This will be a unique experience I’ll remember for years to come.”

Ensign Gabriela Torres, USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) couldn’t agree more.

“Going to the show this morning was an excellent experience,” said Torres. “Watching Flo Rida perform live was great and I really appreciated the hospitality of the NYPD Central Park unit and the staff and Good morning America.”

This year, five U.S. Navy ships, four U.S. Naval Academy Yard Patrol boats, two U.S. Coast Guard cutters, and three Royal Canadian Navy ships are participating in the annual community relations event.

“This is my first time at Fleet Week and the reception has been great,” said Knickerbocker. “There are a lot of fantastic events that our Sailors and Marines get a good New York experience. The establishments within the area have had a warm and welcoming embrace that have been nothing short of spectacular.”

FWNY, now in its 28th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is unparalleled opportunity for the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
