STATEN ISLAND, NY – Sailors and Marines assigned to the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and 3rd Battalion 6th Marines, Weapons Company Scout Sniper Platoon spent the day volunteering with Meals on Wheels during 2016 Fleet Week New York, May 26.

Meals on Wheels of Staten Island, Inc. delivers two meals a day to more than 1,200 senior citizen residents who are 60 years of age and older with restricted mobility.

“Meals on Wheels of Staten Island is the only organization in the five Burroughs that delivers two meals a day to the elderly,” said Roseann Holt. “We have over 450 volunteers and 48 volunteer routes.”

For the event, Sailors and Marines were paired with a volunteer driver on their route to help deliver the meals and interact with senior citizens.

“This was a great opportunity to give back to the community,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Timothy Oldfield. “It was also a unique experience talking to gentlemen who had served in World War II and hearing their stories.”

Several of the residents shared their photos and memorabilia from when they were in the military.

“One gentleman was a Petty Officer 1st Class Carpenters Mate during World War II,” said Lance Cpl. Anthony Muratore. “He showed us pictures, his military ID, and shared several stories about the war.”
