FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - As part of Fort Hunter Liggett’s Month of Military Child celebrations, the Directorate of Families Morale Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) partnered with the San Antonio School to host a Color Run for 200 students, their families and volunteers on April 20, 2016.

“The celebration of the Month of the Military Child is a chance to celebrate the uniqueness and the differences of the military children. It is a month to honor them,” said Pam Duke, FWMR Management Support Assistant.

“It’s a time to increase awareness and bring to light what they do, their sacrifices and their resiliency. They go through some unique situations that most children don’t go through.”
Many Soldiers stationed at Fort Hunter Liggett have children attending San Antonio School.

[This was] “…a fabulous activity where we have our Kindergarten through 8th grade, community members, parents, home schooled children, officers and soldiers from the Fort here to commemorate, honor and celebrate the children of our service members,” said school principal, Pam Hernandez.

“Sometimes it’s not easy for military children; their parents have to go away for six months to a year; some times more. They move a lot and have to leave good friends and make new ones, so this month we recognize the children for their service and their sacrifice,” said Col. Jan Norris, Commander of Fort Hunter Liggett.

The Color Run consisted of a two-mile run with school staff and volunteers tossing colorful powders at the start line, throughout the course of the run and at the finish line. Participants laughed and screamed as they were coated with a rainbow of colors.

“Conducting events like this and keeping an open dialogue with the community, helps us explain some of the challenges the military and their families go through,” said Norris.

The Month of the Military Child was first established by the Secretary of Defense, Caspar Weinberger in 1986 as a way to acknowledge the role of the family in the military.
