Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif. - On May 4, 2016, Fort Hunter Liggett conducted the second of three events to celebrate their 75th anniversary with a focus on WWI and the legacy of Lt. Gen. Hunter Liggett.

"Over six feet in height and generously built, his majestic figure would attract attention in any gathering. There was a depth of experience shining out of his frank eyes, and he radiated mellowness, poise, and positive energy" - Dr. Mitchell Yockelson

The keynote speaker, Dr. Mitchell Yockelson, a recipient of the Army Historical Foundation's Distinguished Writing Award, an archivist and former professor of military history at the U.S. Naval Academy. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, and he has appeared on 60 Minutes, Fox News, PBS, and the History Channel.

At the end of the event, Dr. Yockelson conducted a book signing of his book, "Forty-Seven Days: How Pershing's Warrior's Came of Age to Defeat the German Army in World War I," which prominently features Lt. Gen. Hunter Liggett. In this book, he states that Liggett's leadership as the commander of the First Army in 1918, was instrumental in turning the tides of the war.

"Liggett's ceaseless preparation allowed him to break free of the stereotypical, unimaginative generalship that too often characterized World War I commanders," said Army Historian Michael Bigelow in his pamphlet title, "Hunter Liggett - He Knew How to do it: Generalship, and Preparing for War." "His study and reflection of nearly four decades allowed him to rise above his personal assignments and develop practical solutions to the complexities of modern war."

Lt. Gen. Liggett was born in Reading, Pa., on March 21, 1857. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1879 and his first assignment was with the Fifth Infantry on the Montana frontier.

The event included the unveiling of a commemorative painting donated by Army Veteran Peter G. Dausen. Historical WWI artifacts were on display and commemorative items available for purchase.

Liggett authored two books: "A.E.F - Ten Years Ago in France" and ""Commanding an American Army."
