The Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge is an annual, multi-phase innovation and entrepreneurial competition that brings in teams of students from around the country who invent, design, create and promote inventions in one of four fields: Aerospace and Aviation, Cyber Technology and Security, Energy and Environment, and Health and Nutrition.
Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) has partnered with the Conrad Foundation for this year’s competition.
“Navy Recruiting Command’s partnership with the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge will give the Navy the ability to raise awareness in STEM career fields,” said Capt. Dave Bouve, advertising and marketing department head at NRC. “The competition also allows a diverse group of Navy experts the chance to share their experiences and perspectives with the competitors.”
Judges for the event were selected from a range of career paths based on their expertise and familiarity with the four Conrad Challenge categories.
Helping judge the Energy and Environment category will be Cmdr. Kenneth Roman, director of Submarine and Nuclear Accessions at NRC.
Roman, a Stafford, Va., native, graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Md., with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to earn a Master of Philosophy in Engineering from Cambridge University in England. Roman also holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
With such an accomplished background, Roman looks to provide participating students with the necessary knowledge and experience to improve their products while simultaneously building awareness of STEM.
“I look forward to meeting young, intelligent students interested in STEM programs and research,” said Roman. “This is a humbling and exciting experience to get the opportunity to meet and learn from some of our country’s brightest students. This is a chance to help inspire students to pursue STEM careers. New and inventive ideas within STEM programs continue to make the United States great.”
Winners of the competition can receive scholarships, seed funding grants, patent support and other business services.
The other Navy experts chosen to augment the judging panels this year are Capt. Kathryn P. Hire, former NASA astronaut and current Director of Innovation at the U.S. Naval Academy who will help judge the Aerospace and Aviation category; Lt. Cmdr. Jami J. Peterson, a Medical Corps fellow at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Falls Church, Va., who will be on the Health and Nutrition panel; and Lt. Cmdr. Christopher T. Coy from the staff of Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C., who will be on the Cyber Technology and Security panel.
“There is a long-standing historic connection between the Navy and America's space program, best exemplified by the all-Navy crew of Apollo 12, led by the foundation's namesake, Charles "Pete" Conrad,” said Rear Adm. Jeff Hughes, commander, NRC. “There is close alignment between the focus of our respective organizations — reaching and inspiring youth; encouraging STEM studies and careers; outreach to often under-represented diverse and female students; and dedication to the principles of ambition, hard work, teamwork, and creativity."
