Signal Soldiers got the opportunity to compete and show off their skills April 7 in a “Retransmission Rodeo” at Camp Hovey, South Korea.

Signal Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, along with their peers at the 579th Signal Company, 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, set up various long range antenna systems, installed and configured vehicle-mounted radio systems and sent FM messages, and installed a Blue Force Tracker navigation system and put it into operation.

Each task was designed to test each of the Soldiers and teams who competed in the event.

“The ‘Retrans Rodeo’ was designed to challenge the knowledge and skills of Signaleers across the Korean Peninsula, and share tactics, techniques, and procedures of retrans operations,” said Capt. Jason Haggard, commander, Company C, 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st ABCT.

Haggard and his Soldiers hosted the rodeo, an experience other Signal Soldiers appreciated.

"I think it was incredibly valuable to see and learn how other retransmission teams operate, as well as building relationships throughout the Signal community within our brigade," said Sgt. Rocco Oliverio, a signal support systems specialist, Co. C, 91st Eng. Bn.

The motto of the Signal Corps, “Speed the Message,” is nowhere more important than on the battlefield. Constant communication and being able to give orders and direct operations are critical to mission success, said Haggard.

Signal Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st ABCT, took the top spot in the competition, meant to test signal skills, improve mental agility and resiliency, and build stronger teams across the Peninsula.
