The North Carolina National Guard’s JFHQ DFAC in Raleigh, North Carolina, is back in business starting March 28, 2016, with the help of the N.C. Department of Public Safety food and nutrition service assistant apprenticeship program.
The ten offender-trainees, chosen from a competitive program in the Johnston Correctional Center in Smithfield, dedicate a year towards the apprenticeship, backed by the U.S. Department of Labor and N.C. Department of Commerce. The training by Certified Correctional Food Service staff prepare them for a career in culinary arts.
“For the price, it is very good with great flavor,” said James Smith, a worker with NCPS.
Menu prices range from about $2 for breakfast biscuits, to $3-4 for sandwiches and wraps and $5 for entrées with a side order and drink.
The DFAC is open 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Friday 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. for breakfast and grab and go items.
