YOKOSUKA, Japan – Sailors assigned to the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) painted Commander, Naval Air Force Aircraft Carrier Departmental Awards for 2015 on the side of the ship’s island superstructure March 18.

Sailors painted letters and insignias of various colors to represent their department’s awards, which are intended to recognize sustained superior performance and capability to perform wartime responsibilities.

“I am tremendously proud of each and every one of the Sailors who contributed to their department’s success,” said Capt. Brett Crozier, Ronald Reagan’s executive officer. “Their exemplary work ethic and dedication to their training is the reason our crew is always ready to go and ready to operate at the highest standard.”

Ronald Reagan’s departmental awardees included Air Department, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department, Combat Systems Department, Damage Control Department, Deck Department, Health Service Department, Navigation Department, Operations Department, Reactor Department, Safety Department, Security Department, Supply Department and Weapons Department.

Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Nicholas Cuervos, from Jamaica Queens, New York, helped select the Sailor to paint Air Department’s yellow “E” and said the selection was intended to be an honor.

“Air Department chose someone who, over the course of the year, displayed the work ethic, reliability and accountability that we look for in a junior Sailor,” said Cuervos. “There was only one person to pick for the honor of painting something that would stay on the side of the ship for a long time.”

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Sara Diane Jernigan from Leesburg, Georgia, had the honors for Air Department.

“Its very exciting to be chosen to paint this award,” she said. “It means something special to me because I was chosen out of around 900 people to do it.”

Sailors from different departments cited various reasons for their department’s success. Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Roger Louis Burton III, from Mauldin, South Carolina, said Weapons Department’s selection can be linked to its superior teamwork.

“It was really fun to watch everybody gel together as a team,” said Burton. “Everyone from the top of our chain of command to the bottom holds themselves to high standards, and we try to instill the same values to all of the newer Sailors in our department.”

According to Damage Controlman 1st Class Jeffrey Macatangay, from North Hills, California, his department emphasized training throughout the year and it played a large role in their success.

“We’re always busy training the new crew that’s coming in and preparing for the next training cycle,” said Macatangay. “They will have the knowledge needed to properly assess and combat any casualty. Training is important because, in the event of an actual casualty, everyone will understand their positions. We’re always 100-percent ready to deploy at any time, especially being forward deployed.”

Ronald Reagan provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
