SINGAPORE – Navy Region Center Singapore (NRCS) joined with Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB) and local community organizations to celebrate World Water Day (WWD) at the Lower Seletar Reservoir, March 13, 2016.

The annual event, held at a scenic venue, began at 4 p.m., and attracted more than 500 local Singaporean residents from the Yishun and Sembawang districts along with WWD partners from U.S. Navy Region Center Singapore, Nee Soon South Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. This year’s WWD theme was, “Make Every Drop Count.” The theme supports the importance of community involvement in making an impact on water conservation. The event featured interactive information booths, oral presentations by PUB officials on how to conserve water, a reservoir clean up activity and local food and games for everyone to enjoy.

Having partnered with the PUB for the last six years, NRCS had the opportunity to share and showcase water conservation techniques used throughout its own installation. The NRCS booth displayed charts and images of its cross-connection backflow prevention system used in basic plumbing and its annual main line flushing program.

“We are proud to continue our long-standing participation in World Water Day with the Singaporean community,” said Capt. Scott Murdock, NRCS commanding officer. “Especially this year as we participated in a more localized event that helped bring us closer to the people who work, live, and play in the surrounding area.”

This community bonding was evident as the NRCS booth attracted hundreds of participants with an interactive ball-toss game that many of the locals enjoyed. The game had participants toss three ping pong balls into a carton of evenly spaced cups. If a ball landed in a cup, the contestant won an umbrella for a prize. In this case, it didn’t take much to convince the crowd that competing for an umbrella was a good idea since afternoon showers were looming overhead. Although the game looked like an easy win, for some, it was a far-reaching endeavor.

“I thought the ball-toss game would be easy but actually it was a little bit difficult because I had a hard time judging the distance,” said 13-year-old Celeste Choo, a resident of Yishun, Singapore.

Meanwhile, the environmental team for NRCS benefited from the crowd’s presence as they informed participants on some of the environmental programs used throughout the U.S. Navy. According to Chantry Davis, the NRCS environmental director, this was an important event and a great opportunity to share with local residents how the U.S. Navy reduces its water usage.

“Looking forward, we will continue to improve efforts at Navy Region Center Singapore in terms of not only water conservation but through greater environmental awareness and more importantly, an increased usage of the environmental management system,” Davis added.

Across the U.S. Navy, the environmental management system is used to track compliance through all of its environmental programs. This system incorporates standardized procedures in all areas to include waste management, hazardous materials management, water conservation and much more.
