MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz - Marines are known for making history on the battlefield, but one Marine also believes in making history elsewhere.
Phoenix, Arizona, native Capt. David Coleman, the aviation safety officer with Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron, stationed out of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, recently broke a 20-year-old regional bowling record during the annual Yuma City Open Championships with an overall score of 856 within a three game series, at a local bowling alley.
“I broke the record by one shot, it was so surreal,” said Coleman. “Just knowing that I hold the record, and will hold that record for a while, is an amazing feeling.”
For Coleman, stellar bowling began with his grandfather. The lessons learned from the lineage of Coleman bowlers were passed down with each generation.
“My grandfather taught my dad how to bowl,” said Coleman. “My dad then taught my twin brother and me how to play. We eventually got better than him and began playing on a professional level.”
Coleman took the family tradition to new heights by getting sponsor support from a bowling ball manufacturer.
“He’s a fierce bowler – he definitely gets into the game and hates to lose,” said James Bloomer, a teammate from the United States Marine Corps bowling team. “He’s very talented, can adapt to several different lane conditions, and definitely works on his game more than most people I know.”
Coleman has developed his abilities through hard work and the pursuit of excellence. At a recent tournament in February, his team dominated the league and won first place. As he continues to hone his skills, Coleman hopes that one day he’ll lead on a national level.
