BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. - Barksdale Team 5/6 hosted a Q-and-A discussion for Barksdale NCOs to ask questions to 2nd Bomb Wing Command Chief, Chief Master Sgt. Tommy Mazzone, about the Air Force’s new promotion and enlisted performance report system March 2, 2016, here.

Airmen can say goodbye to “firewall 5s” as numberless EPRs are here and promotions should rack and stack Airmen amongst their peers based more on job performance and less on time-in-grade and time-in-service.

“We asked NCOs what they wanted to hear about,” said Tech. Sgt. Gayla Waddy, Team 5/6 president. “They said they wanted to hear about promotion boards and about enlisted force distribution. What they asked for, we’re providing. Our goals are to see Team 5/6 grow, mentor Airmen and better ourselves as NCOs on Barksdale.”

Nearly 70 NCOs attended the session and asked Mazzone about how community support is documented on EPRs, effective EPR writing techniques, who is present when Airmen are being stratified against each other, and more.

Mazzone described his experience with the new ratings system.

“Having sat on a small board, it’s not the good ol’ boy system,” Mazzone said. “I will tell you unequivocally it is the fairest thing I’ve watched happen. Our promotion system works.”

Mazzone said supervisors have a responsibility to provide feedback to their Airmen, but Airmen have a responsibility to make their own career a success when they’re being looked at for promotions.

“Ultimately, what is your goal as my supervisor?” he said. “It’s to provide me with information necessary to accomplish the mission of my leader. It’s not to get me promoted. It’s to set me up for success so that I can be promoted. I have to promote myself.”
