GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany - German and American military personnel and a dedicated workforce of local national and American civilian workers were honored during an awards ceremony as part of the Director’s Call held Feb. 19 at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies.
When Dr. Robert Brannon, dean of the College of International Security Studies, and Marcia Hampton, library director of the Marshall Center’s Research Library, started working for the U.S. government, America was celebrating its 200th birthday, Jimmy Carter became the 39th President of the United States, Sugar Ray Leonard won an Olympic gold medal, “Rocky” was the top movie; and, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" was a hit on the music charts.
Brannon and Hampton were awarded the 40-year Civilian Length Service Award. Jean Callaghan, from CISS, received the award for 30 years of service. Awarded for 20 years of service were Andrej Efimenko, and Irina Sergeeva, all from CISS. The 15-year pin went to CISS staff members: Maria Filina; Elena Larina; Denis Mikhaylov; and, Denis Rodionov. Jacqueline Garrido, from the Directorate of Business Operations, and Alexander Rezanov, from CISS, received the 10-year pin, and Justine Arnold, from DBO and Valbona Zeneli, from CISS, took home the five-year pin.
“That’s 320 years of service to the U.S. government,” said U.S. Army Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Keith Dayton, Marshall Center director.
More than 300 years of dedicated service was honored by the Marshall Center during an awards ceremony held Feb. 19.
German Capt. Christian Eder, from Alumni Programs, and Senior Master Sgt. Karsten Leitenberger, from the German Support Element, earned the U.S. Expert Weapons Badge for their qualifying scores on the M9 pistol and M16A2 assault rifle.
“Just so you know, the U.S. Army has three marksmanship qualification categories – Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert,” said Dayton, to an audience of about 100 Marshall Center staff and faculty. “So, Captain Eder and Senior Master Sergeant Leitenberger have just received the highest U.S. Army marksmanship badges.”
The Office of the Secretary of Defense certificate of recognition was awarded to U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ekaterina Belova for being nominated as the Senior Enlisted Member of the Year for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Belova was nominated for this recognition based on her exceptional performance of duties while assigned as the non-commissioned officer in charge and department chair for the Partner Language Training Center Europe, Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The Joint Service Achievement Medal was awarded to U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Cedric Simpson, from CISS, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Julio Galvan, from the Marshall Center’s Secretary of the Joint Staff, and U.S. Army Sgt. Angela Christian, from CISS, for their support of the 12th Annual International Senior Enlisted Seminar, hosted by the Commander, United States European Command.
Dayton also made the announcement that the Marshall Center had been awarded the Gold award from the Combined Federal Campaign for donating $28, 941.63.
Also discussed at the Director’s Call were: results of the recent Organizational Climate Survey; European Infrastructure Consolidation, the U.S. and Germany Memorandum of Agreement; and, an update on the Marshall Center’s program plan for fiscal year 2017.
