CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Exemplary Marines and sailors were given the opportunity of a lifetime when senior leaders invited them in for a breakfast to discuss their accomplishments, enhance leadership capabilities and allow the junior service members to pick their brains.
Brig. Gen. David Ottignon, commanding general of 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, hosted an awards breakfast aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Nov. 20, 2015, for Marines and sailors who have won various awards, such as Marine or sailor of the quarter and meritorious promotions, to enhance their leadership capabilities and prepare them for the future.
“I think it’s incredibly important for senior leaders to congratulate and interact with Marines and sailors who have excelled in their respective services and jobs,” Ottignon said. “These individuals need to understand that their dedication to service is appreciated.”
After filling their plates, the service members sat down with Ottignon and other key leaders such as Master Chief Petty Officer Harlan Patawaran, the 1st MLG command master chief, and Sgt. Maj. Troy Black, the 1st MLG sergeant major, to discuss leadership techniques and other topics that would benefit the Marines and sailors in their military careers.
Black spoke to the junior service members about how different leadership techniques are essential when dealing other service members.
“At some point, all of the different leadership styles can be applicable when dealing with your junior Marines and sailors,” Black said. “Every person is different and will react in unique ways when approached in different manners. It is up to you to determine which leadership method is appropriate for every individual and to lead them in the best possible manner.”
The unique experience of sitting down in the general’s house to have breakfast with senior leaders provided the junior service members with insight and guidance for their future in the Navy and Marine Corps.
“I’m quite honored, being relatively new to the Marine Corps, to have the opportunity to sit down with these men and to take in some of the knowledge they have learned over the years,” said Pfc. Alex McClain, a bulk fuel specialist with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st MLG. “Everything that I have heard has been incredibly useful and I plan to take it with me as I advance in my career.”
Events like the 1st MLG awards breakfast reinforce positive mentorship and communication by connecting junior service members with senior leaders, who pass on knowledge and skills to keep the service members of tomorrow ready for whatever comes their way.
