Establishing a positive connection between military members and their on-base community is what the Malmstrom Base Fair is all about. The bond between Airmen, their families and each other is a mutual connection in which all parties can have a strong effect on the others.

The fair, which took place at the Malmstrom AFB Grizzly Bend, Nov. 17, is a mechanism to foster positive influence and provide a lasting connection between Team Malmstrom members and their fellow Airmen and dependents.

“The feedback from attendees was encouraging,” said Lori Muzzana, 341st Missile Wing community support coordinator. “Everyone seemed pleased to have stopped by. We saw active duty families, retirees and Department of Defense civilians.”

In total, 215 people attended the event and 36 organizations, support agencies and event opportunity groups came together to support the base outreach.

In September, the second annual Community Fair was held, but due to limited space the fair was focused on off-base opportunities, leaving an opening for the development of a separate fair – the Base Fair.

This event was an answer to the multiple questions received regarding base agencies and organizations who wanted to become a part of the Community Fair, said Muzzana.

“Montana can also go through harsh weather during the holiday months,” said Muzzana. “The Integrated Delivery System here on base, comprised of a multitude of support agencies from across the installation, discussed the potential of putting together the Base Fair also as a way to remind people of what there all is to do, how to seek assistance and who they could all get involved with during these times.

“Resilience was also a focus of this event,” she continued. “Not only that, but the majority of our active duty Airmen rotate to the field. For their spouses who are working and their children, we brought the agencies to them – a form of one stop education after normal duty hours.”

In order to make the community fair a success, multiple volunteers offered their time and worked together to help the event run smooth.

“I thought the fair went over very well,” said Senior Airman Brett Duffy, 341st Contracting Squadron contracting journeyman. “As part of the Airman Council, we were able to reach 215 members of the Malmstrom community due to the event. I hope that the fair yields a greater amount of participation to the council.

“To my surprise, most members who walked through had heard of our organization but did not know where we met and what we do,” he continued. “As president, I was pleased to be able to reach out to Airmen and tell them about the benefits of joining and actively participating.”

Overall, this Base Fair gave the Malmstrom community a good opportunity to find their niche here, seek an organization they would like to be a part of and connect, said Duffy.
