GARY, Ind. - The Recruit Sustainment Program is the formal process for preparing new Soldiers entering the Indiana Army National Guard and is designed to introduce new warriors to the fundamentals of training in the Indiana National Guard and to ease their adjustment to the military environment.

Maj. Gen. David C. Wood, commanding general of the 38th Infantry Division, Indiana Army National Guard, and Command Sgt. Maj. James Martin are putting the spotlight on the RSP by conducting visits with every RSP unit in the state. “Supporting these new Soldiers who are the future of the Army is my number one priority,” said Wood.

After Soldiers go through their initial processing they are placed on active, paid drilling status while awaiting their ship date to basic combat training. They drill with an RSP close to their home until they depart for basic combat training and then join their actual unit of assignment when they are qualified for their military occupational specialty.

The RSP tour began with a visit to the recruits and cadre of the RSP Detachment 2, B Company in Gary, Ind. on Aug. 16. The unit has consistently been the top performing RSP units in the state for the past several years.

“You are the reason we are here,” Wood told the recruits. “We want to make sure you are off to the right start. We know you will be successful. From here on out you get to be a part of a team—you are no longer in it just for yourself.”

The RSP incorporates academic, physical readiness, and common-task training. Each Soldier is screened for administrative problems as well as height, weight, and physical fitness. New Soldiers progress through various phases of Soldier Empowerment and Readiness training while attending the RSP course.

“You may not feel it yet, but the things that you are learning here are critical skills and experiences you can carry with you for the rest of your life,” Martin said. “When employers look for people to hire they want to hire Soldiers first because of your experience and training. Always take pride in that.”
