COLUMBIA, S.C. — U.S. Army Spc. Louis Russell Hall of the South Carolina Army National Guard was awarded the Purple Heart at a ceremony at the Adjutant General’s building in Columbia, S.C., Sept. 22, 2015.
Hall received the Purple Heart as a result of wounds received in action in Afghanistan on Sept. 22, 2010.
Serving as a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard’s 1221st Engineer Clearance Company in Graniteville S.C. at the time of his injuries, Hall was honored at the ceremony with remarks from U.S. Army Maj. Gen Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the adjutant general for South Carolina, and U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roy V. McCarty, the deputy adjutant general for the South Carolina National Guard.
“I wanted to be part of this ceremony because it is so special to me personally and so important to our agency and our country,” Livingston said.
McCarty explained in his remarks the types of missions Hall’s unit was assigned with during his time in Afghanistan.
“For those that don’t know what a route clearance company does, they’re the Soldiers that went out ahead of others on missions to try to find the IEDs,” McCarty said.
McCarty further explained that the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle that Hall was traveling in encountered an improvised explosive device at the time of his injuries.
“The Purple Heart is one of the greatest honors that the country bestows upon our service members,” Livingston said. “But it doesn’t touch the level of gratitude and debt we have for Russell and his family.”
