NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is enlisting the support of volunteers at its lakes on the Cumberland River and its tributaries in support of National Public Lands Day Sept. 26.
The national theme for this year’s event is “Helping Hands for America's Lands.” It is the largest volunteer hands-on restoration activity of its kind where people do clean up, repair, construction and refurbishment in public parks, forests, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and cultural and historic sites.
Visitors at USACE sites take part in tree planting, erosion control, bank stabilization, building trails, restoring recreation areas, trash pickup, removing invasive species and non-native plants, improving wildlife habitats and rehabilitating playgrounds.
Within the Nashville District the public is encouraged to participate at one of the following NPLD volunteer activities on the dates and times indicated:
Center Hill Lake: Various beautification projects are planned from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Floating Mill Day Use Area. Planned activities this year include trail work and clearing of invasive plant species in the recreation area. Volunteers will meet at the shelter located in the park’s day use area. Cheatham Lake: The Corps is partnering with Boy Scouts of America Oct. 16 to build and put up Eastern Blue Bird Houses. The scouts are building a large surplus of these bird houses to put up on the boundary line of Corps property. They are also building wood duck boxes to be put up at a later date. This project is taking place at the Right Bank Recreation Area starting at 9 a.m. For additional information and directions, contact Park Ranger Dean Austin at 615-792-5697. Cordell Hull Lake: Various service projects are planned from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Defeated Creek Park. Projects this year include trail work, replacement of benches, shoreline cleanup, and parking lot re-striping. Volunteers are asked to meet at the shelter located in the park’s free day use area. Each volunteer and/or group will be asked to sign in, and a free day-use pass will be issued upon completion of the event. Volunteers will be provided with all the tools and equipment to complete the projects, and lunch will be provided. Dale Hollow Lake: Volunteers are needed for National Public Lands Day Event on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015. The daily project will consist of trail maintenance and rehab. Volunteers will meet at Pleasant Grove Parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and work until noon. There is no need for advance sign-ups; just show up. Work consists of trail maintenance to include pruning and trimming along the walking trail and painting park benches. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes, long pants and sunscreen. Tools and water will be provided for all volunteers.
The staff of Dale Hollow Lake is also enlisting the support of volunteers for the annual National Public Lands Day shoreline cleanup and Red Oak Ridge trail work.
The shoreline cleanup is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015. The check-in stations are at Pleasant Grove Recreation Area, Obey River Recreation Area and Willow Grove Recreation Area at Dale Hollow Lake. Advance signups are not needed; just show up. Trash bags are provided at each location. Sponsored by the Friends of Dale Hollow Lake, two $50 cash prizes will be awarded at each cleanup location. These prizes will be drawn from the participant list; one for adults and one for youth. Your efforts to help remove litter off of the lake’s 620 miles of shoreline and 25,000 surface acres of water is much appreciated.
Trail work at Red Oak Ridge Trail is 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015. Meet at the trail head. Volunteer work consists of trash pickup, weed eating, repairing hitching posts and bulletin boards. Advance sign-ups are requested by phoning 931-243-3136. Last minute show-ups are welcome. Volunteers are requested to bring their own tools and gloves. Lake Barkley: Personnel and volunteers have planned three projects for National Public Lands Day. The first is removing trash from the shore line around Eureka Campground, the second is making improvements to two campsites and the third is to make access improvements for those with physical disabilities. Participants will meet at Eureka Campground at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25 and work until 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Lake Cumberland: The 26th Annual Lake Cumberland Cleanup is (Saturday) Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon (Eastern Standard Time) and 9 a.m. to noon (Central Standard Time) with an appreciation picnic at 1 p.m. The cleanup is held at locations all over the lake in an effort to remove trash, tires, appliances, and more from the shoreline. Gloves and garbage bags are furnished. Participants are asked to check-in the day of the event at one of the following locations. For EST participants, go to General Burnside Island State Park, Waitsboro Recreation Area or Conley Bottom Resort. Laurel River Lake: In spite of dense early morning fog and cool temps, 185 registered volunteers and others (agency and organization personnel) gathered Saturday, April 18, 2015, to clean up Laurel Lake. Volunteers picked up and hauled in 3,500 pounds of garbage during the event.

Martins Fork Lake: A shoreline cleanup and other activities are planned from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Volunteers are asked to check in at the Playground Picnic Shelter near the Lake Office. Volunteers are invited to enjoy a picnic cookout afterwards. Call 606-573-7655 for more info or to preregister. Old Hickory Lake: Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 6 to restore and refurbish public lands. Work projects include Trail maintenance and clean up at Shutes Branch Mountain Bike Trail as well as general maintenance and clean up at the Environmental Study Area near Lock 3 Access. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes, pants, and bring water.
