POSTOJNA, Slovenia - More than 1400 participants, including U.S. service members, took part in two opening ceremonies held for the multinational exercise Immediate Response 15. The ceremonies took place in Postojna, Slovenia and one in Slunj, Croatia, on Sept. 9, 2015.

Immediate Response 15 is an annual exercise designed to provide opportunities to plan and synchronize missions and responsibilities among allied and partnered nations to enhance combat readiness and compatibility in the current operational environment.

This year’s participants include contingents from Slovenia, Croatia, The United States, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and United Kingdom.

This will be the fifth IR that is regionally aligned with Balkan allies.

According to Croatian Colonel Denis Tretikjak, Commander, Guard Armor Mechanized Brigade, “This year, we have gathered again with the intention of bringing our interoperability to the next level, and of showing to ourselves and the others that we are willing and able to decisively respond to any potential global threat.”

The exercise is jointly directed by Slovenia, Croatia and the U.S. with training scheduled at sites in both Slovenia and Croatia.

Slovenian Brigadier General Roman Urbanc, Commander, 1st brigade, stated “NATO partnership and cooperation of Slovenia, USA and Croatia as well as the contributions of other countries enables us to create a synergy of goals, military cooperation, improve the security situation and once again enhance cooperation of the countries in the region”

He continued “I am aware that the IR15 is an extremely challenging exercise. But the exercises basic aims and purpose are well defined. The planning process that has been accomplished in the past months was a great start of the way towards the realization of this year’s IR edition. For all those reasons I am absolutely convinced that we will provide the best possible results and complete exercise IR15 successfully”

The exercise will be conducted in two parts starting with 6 days of situational training exercises designed to hone skills and increase interoperability among the participants. This will be followed up with a four day field training exercise that will challenge the lessons learned by colleagues in arms.

According to Colonel William Glaser, Director of Simulations, Joint Multinational Simulation Center, Grafenwoehr Germany, “Immediate response is an opportunity for us to learn from each other not only from our military doctrines and capabilities, but also from the rich histories and cultures each of the nine participating nations bring with them.”
