SILVERDALE, Wash. – Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Deterrent Park received a new brow from USS Will Rogers Veterans Association during a ceremony, Aug. 28.
There were more than 80 members of the association in attendance at the ceremony held beside the full scale, topside replica of USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN 624).
“Once we received word that the park could use a new brow, our association came together to make it happen,” said retired Capt. Malcolm Wright, former commanding officer of USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659) and association director. “We pride ourselves in and do what we can to take care of and honor our Sailors past, present and future.”
Wright gave a speech with Capt. Thomas Zwolfer, commanding officer of NBK and a submariner.
“It’s impressive to see all these veterans and their families here contributing their continued support of our current generation of submariners,” said Zwolfer.
Zwolfer closed the ceremony with a ribbon cutting with an association representative.
“We believe in the mission and do what we can to make it dignified and respectful of that mission,” said Wright after the ceremony came to an end.
The park is located at NBK – Bangor’s upper base between Trident Training Facility and Commander, Submarine Group Nine headquarters.
Deterrent was established in April 2000 and also features the Forty-One For Freedom Memorial, describing Submarine Force history.
