PHOENIX – U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Thomas Brown grew up in the small desert town of Salome, Ariz. He drives a big diesel Ford, which he’ll tell you is the only truck a person in the right mind drives – he doesn’t hold much back – and he has always strived to push his personal limits.
In 2005 Brown accepted the ultimate challenge and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, wanting to take his place amongst the Marines and make a difference.
In this interview Brown tells us more about himself and what excites him about Marine Week Phoenix, Sept. 10-13, 2015.
Q: Where are you from and where did you graduate from high school?
A: I am from Salome, Ariz. and I graduated from Salome High School in 2006.
Q: What was your favorite part about growing up in Arizona?
A: All of the outdoor activities I was able to do; riding dirt bikes, quads, shooting, camping – Just being in the outdoors.
Q: When did you join the Marine Corps and why?
A: I joined the Marine Corps in October of 2005. I joined because of the conflict that was going on in Iraq and I really wanted to do my part. Family heritage in combat was also a big motivator as well as some of my friends who had joined. I wanted to follow in their footsteps and take my place amongst the Marines.
Q: What is your job in the Marine Corps and what are some of your more memorable experiences?
A: I am a mortarman in the infantry. Some of my more memorable experiences are traveling the world on the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS New Orleans, as well as seeing the major conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and doing my part to help resolve those and help their local populace.
Q: What are you looking forward to most during Marine Week Phoenix, and what would you most recommend the community see?
A: I’m looking forward to the population of Arizona getting first hand experiences with more Marines and seeing the variety and the diversity of the Marine Corps, aside from just the war fighting side.
