U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – Old Hickory Lock is closing July 14 to Aug. 4, 2015, to all public access, including navigational traffic, for dewatering and maintenance.

Old Hickory Lock was opened to navigation traffic in June 1954 and is one of four locks located on the 300-plus navigable miles of the Cumberland River. It is a single chamber measuring 84-feet wide and 400-feet long. It is located at mile 216.2 and is approximately 11.5 miles northeast of Nashville, Tennessee. During normal lake levels, the lock will lift a boat 60 feet from the river below the dam to the lake above the dam. The lock releases over 15 million gallons of water each time it is emptied.

The purpose of dewatering the lock is to inspect and repair those components that operate under the surface of the water to include the lower miter gates and valves.

Visitors will not be allowed to visit the lock during this closure.
