North Carolina National Guard unit trains with multinationals for peacekeeping mission

200th Military Police Command

HOHENFELS, Germany - Commands shouting, batons beating and U.S. Soldiers wearing riot control gear set the scene at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center for a National Guard unit from North Carolina June 15 in preparation for a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.

Led by the military police of the Slovenian armed forces, 1st Battalion, 252nd Armor Regiment’s Alpha Company began initial training exercises for crowd and riot control. Included in the exercise was a team of guest observers from Fort Bliss, Texas, to assist the units in the training rotation to better understand the core processes for CRC.

“This training is to get the unit in the right mindset for Kosovo. It is to prepare them for the main mission focus, which is peace and stability operations,” said Capt. Jeremy Arnold, a guest observer from 1st Battalion, 360th Infantry Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Getting trained by the Slovenian army provides quality hands-on instruction for U.S. units going through CRC exercises, since the Slovenians' mission is to train with the focus on peace and stability operations, said Arnold.

We train other military units so that they can be given the knowledge and skill set to become better at performing peace and stability operations, said 1st Sgt. Mitja Planinc, company first sergeant for the Slovenian army military police.

Learning these techniques will make our units a lot more effective in Kosovo, said Staff Sgt. George Campbell, a squad leader with the 1-252nd AR’s Alpha Company.

The 1-252nd AR and other subordinate National Guard and Army Reserve units will be performing peace and stability operations in Kosovo under the command of the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, also known as Old Hickory, from Clinton, North Carolina.
