TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The 349th Force Support Squadron and 349th Security Forces Squadron demonstrated their expeditionary and crisis response skills June 6 - 7, 2015, here during the Air Force Specialty Code training weekend.

“Training in a bare base situation or for this scenario earthquake response, in which we build our own facilities for support, enables us to get quality one-on-one training and hands-on experience,” said Staff Sgt. Jeffery Langer, 349 FSS. “I love hands on training. Stuff like this is why I joined the military.”

Langer was the lead NCO for the single palletized expeditionary kitchen, which provided hot meals for Airmen in the expeditionary combat skills training area.

A qualified 10-man team can be setup the SPEK in an hour and 45 minutes, Langer said. It also can serve approximately 550 personnel and be packaged onto a single pallet in an hour and half for expedient services capability.

“Being out here in the field, building the kitchen and tents, and serving food has shown me how we do a lot for our deployers,” said Airman 1st Class Andrew Colvin, 349 FSS. “This was a fun and new experience for me.”

Approximately 20 FSS Airmen supported more than 40 defenders as they accomplished a wide variety of operations.

Throughout the weekend the defenders from the 349 SFS performed dismounted and mounted combat patrols, security for a California Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk during a simulated blood transfer, and a fly-away security detail. In addition, they took part in a designated marksman course, shoot move communicate simunition drills and much more.

“This AFSC weekend has enabled us to apply our lesson plans, training and battle drills into real-world and expeditionary scenarios that any of our defenders can find themselves in,” said Senior Airman Jesse Arreola, 349 SFS bare base operations lead trainer. “We have some of the most experienced squad leaders and it greatly helps the teaching and reinforcement of (standard operating procedures) and (tactics, techniques and procedures) for future deployments. It gave our Airmen a better understanding of our mission capabilities for the Air Force.”
