CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines with 8th Communications Battalion, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, held a battalion field meet aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 5, 2015.

The field meet included events such as a mile and a half relay run, 300 pull-ups for time, a tire flip relay, armored Humvee pull for 50 meters for time, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear relay, and a tug-of war competition in which each company within the battalion competed for bragging rights as the best company.

Corporal Benjamin Finney, a legal admin chief with Headquarters Company, 8th Comm. Bn., said the field meet was implemented in order to build camaraderie, competition and Esprit de Corps.

“[The field meet] builds that competition between the companies which is what the Marine Corps is about,” Finney said. “We’re supposed to be the best in the country and we are the best in the country; this just adds to that sense of competition.”

Along with the winning company, the company with the least amount of points won a “chump trophy.”

Major David Peck, company commander of Service Company, the winning company of the field meet, said that he talks to his Marines about winning and winning with a warrior spirit.

“From the day they check in I talk to them about being a warrior who also happens to be a technician or mechanic,” Peck said. “If the Marines remember they’re warriors, then all of the stuff like physical fitness is going to be important to them too.”

Finney said that he hopes more units get on board with morale-building events such as this.

With the field meet being a bi-annual event, Marines with Service Co. will have to compete again in order to keep the bragging rights within the battalion.
