MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. - Security forces personnel from Malmstrom Air Force Base had the chance to compete for first place during the Fourth Annual Aces Cop Combat Challenge held on base June 5. During the competition, Airmen were required to work in teams of four and push themselves to their physical and mental limits to complete each station of the event in record time.
Throughout the 22 stations, team members solved critical thinking scenarios, performed physical feats, combined their efforts to defeat mental games, assembled firearms from pieces and displayed expert marksmanship skills, all while under constant duress and physical stress.
“This competition is very physically challenging,” said Staff Sgt. Joann Ayon, 341st Security Forces Group competition judge.
The infamous Team Pain station required participants to complete five staggered push-ups in a mud pit, flip a massive tire four times and repeat the entire process for 15 minutes, or until the point of exhaustion.
The Chemical Warfare and Box of Guns stations tested competitors’ career-specific understanding while creating an environment where without the help and combined knowledge of each team member, success would be impossible.
“Teamwork and a lot of strategy [helped us accomplish each station],” said Senior Airman John Carlson, 341st Missile Security Forces Squadron member. “I think these events definitely help to build that teamwork also.”
In total, 18 teams participated in the competition.
“This is my second year participating in the challenge,” said Carlson. “The hardest part is the physical aspect of each event and keeping that teamwork.”
According to Carlson, being able to participate in the event was something his entire team was very excited about and they trained intensely in order to be prepared for what they were about to undertake.
The 341st Tactical Response Force fire team earned the championship title and bragging rights until next year’s competition.
Malmstrom’s 341st MSFS team came in second and the 341st Security Forces Squadron fire team took third.
As home to one of the largest security forces groups in the U.S. Air Force, the competition served to strengthen the bond of Malmstrom’s security forces members. Success of the event was only made possible due to volunteers, spectators and most importantly, the competitors.
