MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Coffee comes from many places around the world and is the beverage of choice for many people to get their mornings started. For service members, a cup of coffee provides more than just a mid-day boost, it can brighten their day and bring them a taste of home.

Holy Joe’s Café donated more than 750,000 cups of coffee to several chaplains representing units aboard the Combat Center, May 19. The volunteer driven organization is run by the First Congregational Church based out of Wallingford, Connecticut.

“Lots of people like coffee,” said Lt. Cmdr. Dennis Wheeler, assistant chief of staff of religious ministries, Headquarters Battalion. “It’s not only an opportunity for us to reach out to the units but to provide them something without asking for anything in return.”

The coffee was provided by Green Mountain Coffee in 35 double stacked pallets and distributed throughout the Combat Center by the unit Family Readiness Officers and chaplains.

“We developed a partnership with Green Mountain through them reaching out to us,” Wheeler said. “Over the last year and a half they have donated to the Combat Center five times.”

The organization began in 2006 at Sapher Air Base, Baghdad, when Lt. Col. Timothy Sturgill, chaplain, mounted a wooden roof between two buildings and began distributing coffee to deployed service members.

Since its inception, Holy Joe’s Café has partnered with more than 1,500 chaplains across the globe and distribution and transportation companies such as Fed Ex and Conway Freight that deliver to more than 25 military installations.

The organization has come a long way since its beginnings and now donations of ground coffee come from churches across the country. Holy Joe’s Café strives to remind service members in garrison and overseas they are not alone.

“The military fights for the freedom to enjoy a good cup of coffee,” Wheeler said. “The donated coffee serves as a reminder to the service members that people are still thinking about them.”
