MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. - Malmstrom’s quarterly Wing Sports Smackdown brought Airmen together for a day of fun, excitement and competition May 13 at the Grizzly Bend.

More than 200 Team Malmstrom members attended and had the opportunity to go head-to-head with their friends and co-workers in several events.

“We had a great turnout of people who participated,” said Virginia Crispin, 341st Force Support Squadron marketing assistant. “[Events included a] 5K run, obstacle course, spades, foosball, pingpong, corn hole, three-point shootout and volleyball tournament.”

Additionaly, Airmen were able to play Ultimate Frisbee, paintball, horseshoes and take part in a weapons disassembling challenge.

The help of more than 13 sponsors from the local Great Falls community made the event possible, said Crispin.

This quarter, Airmen were also able to compete in a paintball marksmanship competition. At the paintball station, up to three contestants at a time fired a designated amount of rounds at a target roughly 20 yards away. Whoever’s marksmanship skills were the best earned the first place title and bragging rights for the round.

“This was a very good and well put together event,” said Maj. Ronald Spencer, 561st Network Operations Squadron Detachment 4 commander. “We’re a small detachment here on Malmstrom and having the opportunity to participate with everyone else around the base was great.”

According to Airmen in attendance, they were very glad to see support from their senior leadership. Officers and senior noncommissioned officers took time to connect with Airmen by participating in sports events and judging competitions.

The smackdown serves as a platform to build camaraderie within the Malmstrom community. For next quarter, the hope is to build upon the this platform that has already been made from past events by offering Airmen of all ranks, friends and family members an outlet to enjoy one another’s company, and help bring the community together.

“The smackdown is a great way for Team Malmstrom members and members of the community to connect with one another and form a lasting bond,” said Spencer. “I was glad to be a part of it and look forward to many more in the future.”
