    KFOR Regional Command East

CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo - Around 20 Soldiers from Forward Command Post and Task Force Medical with Multinational Battle Group-East not only taught children they can have a better smile by maintaining good dental hygiene, but they also put a smile on their faces by bringing gifts to students who attends elementary school Vuk Karadjic in Priluzje, Kosovo, May 11.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lindquist, a medical platoon sergeant for Headquarter and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron (Airborne), 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, and native of Queens, New York City, was among the ones who organized the collection of donations, the visit and the dental hygiene class.

"Today we conducted a dental hygiene class,” said Lindquist. “We spent more time with the kids doing activities like coloring books, and handing out soccer balls.”

Soldiers donated 61 soccer balls, crayons, coloring books and stuffed animals to students in first and second grade.

U.S. Army Capt. Natalie Campbell, dentist for TF Med with MNBG-E, and native of Miami, Florida, conducted the dental hygiene class.

"It is important to teach children at a young age about proper dental hygiene, because they get excited about it, and they go home and teach their families about it,˝ said Campbell. "As they get older they will remember this moment, and they will remember why they want to have teeth that look good.˝

Campbell added that this was different from her day to day activities back at Camp Bondsteel.

"I got the chance to teach children how to floss, brush and protect their teeth and give them tools to help themselves and their families," continued Campbell.

She also highlighted that its important to make the class fun for the children.

"If we make it fun they will remember it, but if we don’t they will not be engaged and they will not remember,” said Campbell.

Lindquist explained that all the donations and the money to get the soccer balls were collected from FCP and TF Med.

"All the stuff we had with us today was donated from Soldiers,˝ said Lindquist.

Srdjan Zdravkovic, director of elementary school Vuk Karadjic, said that the visit means a lot to the kids and that the class on dental hygiene is important for them.

"The kids seem very relaxed, and they really enjoyed the soccer balls they got as gifts,˝ said Zdravkovic.

Lindquist added that there are plans to make more visits to various schools in Kosovo.

˝It is about the kids,” said Lindquist. “If you have one kid out of 30 responding with a smile on his face, we have completed our job.”
