SAN DIEGO – Lincoln Military Housing celebrated National Spouse Appreciation Day by going door-to-door handing out gift bags and expressions of thanks to military families May 8.

According to Cindy Farless, Lincoln Military Housing community service director, the company handed out an estimated 20,000 gift bags in the entire Navy Region Southwest. Farless’ team assembled an estimated 9,000 gift bags for military families in the San Diego area.

“Not every military spouse is a mother, but they are all unsung heroes worthy of recognition for their daily sacrifice,” said Farless. “We wanted to add to the mothers day celebration by giving our own personal touch door-to-door.”

The National Military Spouse Appreciation Day was established on April 17, 1984, by then President Ronald Reagan, through Proclamation 5184. The first celebration was in May 23 of the same year but Caspar Weinberger, a former U.S. Secretary of Defense, set the annual date to be observed the Friday before Mother’s Day.

“I thought it was a very nice thing to do,” said Jackie Martinez, a military spouse and mother, her husband is currently stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Ragan (CVN-76). “I didn’t know it was spouse appreciation day, but who doesn’t appreciate an unexpected gift and thank you?”

This recognition day is in thanksgiving to the sacrifices, help and assistance of spouses of the country’s military personnel. National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is one of several annual events in May, the country’s observance of National Military Appreciation Month.

Lincoln Military Housing (LMH) was formed in 2001 through a Department of Defense (DOD) contract with parent company Lincoln Property Company.
