    BISMARCK, N.D. — Command Sgt. Maj. Brad Heim, of Bismarck, will formally assume duties May 6 as the North Dakota National Guard’s ninth state command sergeant major from Command Sgt. Maj. Harley Schwind, of Mandan. The change of responsibility ceremony will be held approximately 4 p.m. at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck.

    Heim, a native of Velva, North Dakota, enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1987. Throughout his 28-year career, 21 of which have been full time, he has served the organization in a variety of assignments with the 164th Engineer Battalion, 68th Troop Command, the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, 142nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and the Camp Grafton Training Center. In 2013, Heim deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the U.S. Army Central Command’s retention sergeant major for National Guard affairs with duty in both Kuwait and Afghanistan. He resides in Bismarck with his wife, Barb, and their two children.

    Schwind, a native of LaMoure, North Dakota, joined the N.D. Army National Guard in 1981 as a combat engineer with the 141st Engineer Battalion. Since then, he has served with the 164th Engineer Battalion, Engineer Brigade, 34th Infantry Division and 68th Troop Command. With the North Dakota Military Academy and Engineer School at Camp Grafton Training Center, near Devils Lake, he served as an instructor, course manager, branch chief, senior instructor and assistant commandant. During his tenure, Schwind completed engineer construction missions in Panama (1989 and 1993), Honduras (1989), South Korea (1998) and Germany (2005). He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007 with the 164th Engineer Battalion. In 2012, he was appointed as the North Dakota National Guard’s 8th State Command Sergeant Major. This summer, he will assume duties as the Senior Enlisted Leader (SEL) for NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Schwind resides in Mandan, with his wife, Darcy, and their three children.
