    BISMARCK, N.D. - Command Sgt Maj. Brad L. Heim enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1987. In his 28-year career he’s served in assignments all across North Dakota. His first duty assignment as a traditional Guardsman was with the 164th Engineer Battalion. Heim served with this unit until 1992 before transferring to the 68th Troop Command. In 1994, he entered the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program after being selected as a recruiter with duty in Williston, North Dakota. From 1995 to 1997, he served as a recruiter with the Fargo, North Dakota recruiting station.

    In 1998, he was selected as a Guidance Counselor for the Military Entrance Processing Station and later served as the noncommissioned officer in charge of the North Dakota Army National Guard’s southeast recruiting team. In 2003, he served as the first sergeant for the 142nd Engineer Battalion’s rear detachment.

    In 2005, Heim was assigned as the first sergeant for the Recruiting and Retention battalion; and later in 2007, after promotion to the rank of Sergeant Major; he served as the battalion’s senior enlisted leader.

    Heim assumed duties as the command sergeant major for the 164th Engineer Battalion in 2011. In 2013, he was selected as the command sergeant major for the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade while simultaneously serving full-time as the sergeant major for the North Dakota Army National Guard’s G-1 (Personnel) section. In late 2013, Heim deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the U.S. Army Central Command’s retention sergeant major for National Guard affairs with duty in both Kuwait and Afghanistan. After returning home to North Dakota in 2014, Heim was assigned as the sergeant major for the Camp Grafton Training Center, near Devils Lake, North Dakota.

    In April 2015, he was selected as the North Dakota Army National Guard’s ninth state command sergeant major.

    Heim’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (6 Awards), Army Commendation Medal (2 Awards), Army Achievement Medal (2 Awards), Army Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2 Awards), North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4 awards), Overseas Service Ribbon, National Guard Master Recruiting Badge, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with “M” Device), Global War on Terror Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal. His state awards include the North Dakota National Guard Emergency Service Ribbon (3 awards), the North Dakota National Guard Meritorious Service Ribbon (2 awards), the North Dakota National Guard Commendation Ribbon, the North Dakota National Guard Service Ribbon (4), NDNG Strength Management Ribbon, NDNG Basic Training Ribbon and the Third US Army SSI-FWTS.

    Heim grew up in Velva, North Dakota and currently resides in Bismarck with his wife Barb and their two children. Heim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Mary and is participates in many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, flying, skydiving and climbing.
