SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. - The busiest airfield in the U.S. National Guard is also the best.

The Airmen of the 127th Operations Support Squadron’s airfield management team have been awarded the Ronald D. McCarthy Airfield Management Facility of the Year for calendar year 2014. It is the latest in a string of awards earned by the team at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. In 2010 and 2011, airfield management group won awards for the airfield “complex” of the year. In 2012, Senior Master Sgt. Kelli Martin was named the Air National Guard’s airfield manager of the year.

“The dedicated professionalism of these outstanding individuals led the way in setting and exceeding superior standards,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Rogers, functional area manager of airfield operations at the National Guard Bureau.

The airfield management team at Selfridge is made up of nine contract employees and four military members. Martin is the airfield manager and oversees the operation.

“Our little team works well together, which is a key reason why you win awards like this,” she said.

In addition to flight operations of the Michigan Air National Guard, Selfridge is home to flying units of the Coast Guard, Army and Customs & Border Protection agency.

Among the highlights of calendar year 2014 for the airfield operation were:

    • Completion of $3.5 million in runway renovations
    • The replacement of more than 100 incandescent shoulder lights on the runway with LED lights, resulting in an 80 percent energy cost savings
    • Continued operations during near-record snow accumulations
    • Serving as the host for the highly-successful 2014 Selfridge Open House & Air Show
    • Providing training assistance to other Air National Guard wings and
    • Supporting the FBI during a major training exercise

“Clearly, the airfield management team at Selfridge has built a legacy of excellence that sets the standard not only for the Air National Guard but for our entire U.S. military,” said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum. “And that’s our goal here – not to just meet the standard, but to exceed it.”

Almost 8,000 takeoffs and landings took place at Selfridge Air National Guard Base during fiscal year 2014 – an increase of about 700 from fiscal year 2013, despite limited activity on the runway for more than a month due to the renovations.
