Air National Guard Emergency Managers Continue Training at Global Dragon

    PERRY, GA, UNITED STATES

Story by Staff Sgt. Christopher Muncy

    106th Rescue Wing

PERRY, Ga. - More than a 100 emergency management personnel from the Air National Guard continued training during Global Dragon deployment for training at the Guardian Centers, Perry, Ga., March 9, 2015. During day two's training scenarios, teams cycled through various stations sampling unknown simulated biological materials.

"The purpose of the training is to build confidence and refine techniques for sampling," according to Tech. Sgt. Lindy Ross, Global Dragon cadre, an emergency manager from the 106th Rescue Wing, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. "We are using a commercial product to simulate biological contaminants. Once they finish, we can see under ultraviolet light if Airmen had any contaminated material on their gloves or equipment."

Airmen are tested throughout the scenario to ensure they maintain proper decontamination procedures.

Airmen joined over a 100 emergency managers and bioenvironmental technicians representing more than twenty ANG units for two weeks of critical skill development and improvement. The first three days were dedicated to classroom training and graduated from basic to more advanced scenarios. This exercise required Airmen to work while wearing respirators and rubber gloves. Following this training, the Airmen are required to work in fully sealed Level A suits. The event was hosted by the Guardian Centers and included multiple subject matter experts from all over the country.

A proper response involves coordination among multiple teams, agencies and systems. Working from an incident action plan, emergency managers must be experienced in setting up decontamination tents, communication systems between agencies and how emergency management equipment works to detect possible contaminants. The event will culminate in a series of full-scale exercises with all aspects of the training put into action.

"To do all of this in one condensed setting with the experience and people we have [on hand] here, it's an opportunity that not a lot of people get,” said Staff Sgt. Mitchell Snead, a cadre instructor at Global Dragon and emergency manager from the 125th Fighter Wing, Jacksonville Fla. “It's an opportunity to get a lot of training they wouldn't get at home. It's an impressive site and the level of realism they have here is unlike anything else available that I've ever seen."
