The New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing celebrated 80 Years of Heritage on May 24, 2026. The story of the 106th began when the historic WWII Army Air Forces 394th Bombardment Group was officially redesignated and allotted to the New York Air National Guard on May 24, 1946. The wing underwent several designations over the years before becoming the Air National Guard’s first rescue wing with the designation of the 106th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group on June 14, 1975, later named the 106th Rescue Wing.
