RIJEKA, Croatia – Sailors assigned to the U.S. 6th Fleet command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) participated in a community relations project (COMREL) at the Karasova Ulica Kindergarten School in Rijeka, Croatia, March 20-24, 2015.

Sailors visited the school to paint and conduct maintenance on several areas of its exterior, including gates, fences, flower pots and playground equipment.

"I thought the COMREL was a good way to connect with the local community. The school’s staff was very welcoming and they appreciated our combined efforts. It really makes me feel good to know that our command is able to reach out and help the local population in such a positive way," said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Jules Warren.

"I think that this COMREL was very successful. I hope that the Mount Whitney has the opportunity to participate in more uplifting and fulfilling COMRELs like this one in the future," said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Stephen Mirambeau.

    Quick Facts:
    • Mount Whitney Sailors enjoyed a lunch with the teachers and took the time to visit with the school children who seemed happy to get the opportunity to meet the ship’s crew.

    • Mount Whitney Sailors performed more than 30 hours of community service during the five-day event. Karasova Ulica Kindergarten School educates approximately 130 children, ranging in age from 4 to 6 years old.

    • USS Mount Whitney, forward deployed to Gaeta, Italy, is scheduled to be in dry dock until mid-summer. U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
