VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean did not deter the more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes and supporters from participating in the 22nd annual Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Feb. 7.
Thousands of participants, many in costumes of their favorite cartoon or comic book characters, braved frigid waters to show their support. Others took part in a corresponding 5K run or enjoyed an assortment of entertainment and food vendors on scene.
“I’m here to support the Special Olympics, participate with the Chief’s Mess and, have a good time,” said Master Chief Electronics Technician Gerald Hagdorn, attached to Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic.
Many military members not only participated in the event but also joined with local police, fire and rescue agencies to provide support for the safety perimeter in the water and emergency services.
This year’s Polar Plunge event raised $1.15 million for the Special Olympics Virginia as well as brought further awareness to the power of Special Olympics.
