CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Sgt. 1st. Class Festus Dokyi of the 3D Medical Command Operational Post Forward (3D MCDS OCP FWD) and Staff Sgt. Justin Bearden of the 67th Forward Surgical Team (FST) graduated from the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Certification class 15-002 January 16, 2015, which was conducted by the United States Army Central Command at the zone 1 theater.
The 13th ESC Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Burton was the guest speaker. “There are 3 ways to improve the SHARP Program within the Army. Institutional training which consists of our Soldiers attending this type of training and accepting the responsibility to be the guardians of this high priority tenet. Operational training can be conducted via Sergeant’s time training where the first level noncommissioned officer can maximize the effectiveness of his or her influence” said Burton.
“Those Soldiers who embrace the program and stand united against SHARP violations will win the fight. Those soldiers who do not will be removed from the ranks” added Burton.
Sgt. 1st class Dokyi and Staff Sgt. Bearden now join a growing group of Senior NCOs and Officers who are responsible for training soldiers, advising Commanders and caring and providing support for survivors.
Col Nelson G. Rosen Commander of the 3D MCDS OCP (FWD) congratulated both soldiers on their important benchmark in their career and added “Every Soldier that we send to SHARP training is a leader in the battle to eliminate SHARP violations from the Army” he also added that “while it takes everyone to win the fight, we need leaders and this course makes leaders.”
For the second graduation in a row, “A Victim’s Perspective,” a poem written by Lt. Col. Katherine Murdock, 3D Medical Command Deployment Support Human Resources officer in charge and Sexual Assault Response coordinator (SARC), was recited by some of the Sexual Assault Response Coordinators.
Murdock wrote the poem when she first arrived on Camp Arifjan in the middle of 2013, illustrating what a soldier would have to go through if faced with sexual harassment or sexual assault. This is a resounding reminder of the impact the 3D Medical Command Deployment Support has made and continues to make in the ARCENT and CENTCOM areas of operation.
