KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services employees protect the environment by ensuring property turned in by customers is reused or recycled, but DLA Disposition Services employees in Kandahar, Afghanistan, have temporarily taken environmental protection a step further.

When a bird’s nest with two eggs was discovered inside a large box of wire, employees took steps to protect it. The box was marked to prevent any accidental disturbances of the nest and to provide a safe haven for the baby birds, DLA Disposition Services environmental protection specialist Nikisone Leoso wrote in an email.

“In the midst of our daily routine of forklifts loading and unloading heavy trucks at the DLA Disposition Services Kandahar yard, we are able to adjust and coexist with the wildlife in the desert heat,” Leoso said. “We can still complete our daily mission without disturbing the wildlife that seeks refuge to our site.”

According to Leoso, people working at the site talk about the birds while on break and take care not to disturb the nest.

Leoso said that the birds will take off in a few weeks, not knowing the impact they had on the site and the people working there.

“After all, they were here before we moved in, so they’re just sharing their environment with us,” he said.
