MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The 81st Regional Support Command hosted a ribbon cutting /re-opening ceremony for the U.S. Army Reserve Pier in Morehead City, N.C., on May 3, 2014.

The upgraded pier was redesigned to house the LCU 2000-series boats operated by 824th Transportation Company. The 824th has two ships, the LCU 2026 and the LCU 2028, and in 2011 the Morehead City wooden pier was damaged by Hurricane Irene. This $3 million dollar project replaced that wooden pier with concrete to make the pier more resilient towards storm damage.

The 81st RSC commander, Maj. Gen. Gill Beck, welcomed the Soldiers of the unit and thanked them for their service. He reminded each Soldier of how valuable family members are to the Army Reserve mission.

“Just try to make sure that you thank your family members, because they are what truly sustains us as a force,” said Beck.

“Gen. Odierno (chief of staff of the U.S. Army) has said, ‘The strength of our nation is our Army; the strength of Army is our Soldiers and the strength of our Soldiers is our families.’ So never forget what we have in terms of the family support,” said Beck.

Just before the ceremony, Soldiers from the 824th responded to an explosion in the marina nearby that injured two civilians found on the dock suffering from 2nd to 3rd degree burns. They assisted with aid until EMS arrived and deployed absorbent booms used to catch released fuel in the water.

Maj. Gen. Peter Lennon, commander of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command, commended the Soldiers who reacted to the explosion.

“Ladies and gentlemen, right after the explosion you saw some of the crew from the 2028 boat hopped on the zodiac boat and applied aid to those civilian who were just hurt,” said Lennon. “That’s the type of Soldiers that we have. That’s the type of members that I have in the 824th, and I am very proud of all that you have done.”

Several dignitaries were on-hand as the command staff, U.S. Rep. Walter Jones Jr., and Mayor-Pro Tem Morehead City George Ballou addressed the crowd.

“This is a celebration of an investment by your government into making sure that the 824th Transportation will have what it needs to continue to serve people of America,” said Jones.

Jones is a strong advocate of the country, the rebuilding of the Army Reserve and National Guard. His concerns are focused on the well-being of the nation’s veterans and the treatment for Soldiers suffering from PTSD and TBI.

The renovation also included new docks, piers seawalls and utilities. The pier is part of the reserve center that served as the command center by local, state, and federal organization in response to a hazardous spill in 2010. The facility features an Area Maintenance Support Activity (AMSA) shop, the main Reserve Center building and pier from mooring Army watercraft.

“This is a great day for partnership between the operational commands and the 81st RSC. This project was not born overnight, although it was needed as a result of an overnight event. It’s a culmination and a great opportunity,” said Lennon.
